How did we get Gore-tex?
On 17th September Bob Gore, aged 83, passed away. His company used PTFE ( Teflon) for insulating tape and decided to stretch it to try to make it more efficient. The result was a material with tiny holes which allowed water vapour to pass through but not liquid water. Gore-tex was born. As well as the benefits to ramblers it is used in industrial filters, military clothing, smartphones, implants for heart surgery and even the bags for bagpipes.
