Midweek walk for Thursday 28th April 2022
Following our intended walks aim of restarting the midweek rambles, Jim hopes, weather permitting, to lead a 7.5 mi (on the ground) moderate walk from Portavadie to Millhouse via Ascog Bay. This is a variegated walk, first on tracks over ancient uplands containing an ancient neolithic observatory site, then on an undulating path thru deciduous woods fringing a secluded west coast double-bay and finally across extensive Kilbride Bay to the Millhouse Road and the newly opened cafe at the Barn. Of special interest is the Polphail Stone, believed to be an ancient astronomical pole-star marker, the central feature of area where neolithic British astronomy, dating from the time of building of the Pyramid of Giza, is an essential aspect of the landscape. We catch the 7:15 ambus N out of Guilford Square to catch the 8:10 ferry from Rhubodach - sorry it's an early start. The bus back from Portavadie is at 2:55 pm to catch the 5:05 pmbus at Rhubodach. (No doubt the total journey time could be shortened by an hour if the leg from Rothesay to Rhubodach was accomplished by car.) You'll need a packed lunch and a drink, and, though not essential, a walking pole might prove useful. Hoping to see some of you on the walk.
Happy trails,
Jim
